Mary LANGFORD (nee BALDWIN) born 10 April 1828 in Glinton, Northhamptonshire, England and died 30 December 1906 in Adelaide, SA and married Samuel LANGFORD in 1848 at Parish of Castor Church, Ailsworth, Northamptonshire, England. This card was given to those who attended Mary's funeral at the Methodist Cemetery, Payneham, SA in 1906 Samuel and Mary Langford immigrated to South Australia from England on the ship Stebonheath. They departed Plymouth on 31 January 1849 and arrived at Port Adelaide on 11 May 1849. They were living at McLaren Vale in SA when their first two sons were born and at Wickham Hills when their first daughter was born. Samuel first purchased land in the Hundred of Kuipto. He purchased other land in the hundred of Willunga in 1857. He sold this land and the land in Kuipto in 1860. His activities in the period 1860-1878 are not known. The marriages of their children were celebrated in the Wickham Hills/Kanganilla area. Samuel and Mary bought Section 283 in the hundred of Pekina in 1879 for one pound an acre. Samuel entered into Credit Selection Agreement No 11,111 which required him to pay some rent and set out terms of purchase. Remains of their stone dwelling remain on the section, made from local stone gathered from the property. They survived under harsh conditions farming until 1888 when the Mortgagee foreclosed on the property. They then moved to Olary near Broken Hill where their son William was working. In early 1900, daughter Maria negotiated the purchase of property at 44,45 High Street, Kensington where Samuel and Mary retired. | ![]() |
